Glühwein: Hot Magic from Antiquity

The history of our beloved Christmas market classic is older than you might think: already in ancient Rome, wine was mixed with noble spices and honey. This "Conditum Paradoxum" was intended to aid digestion and, thanks to expensive imported spices like cinnamon and cloves, was for a long time an exclusive luxury drink for the nobility before it began its triumph across medieval Europe. The drink needed to be heated quickly and properly in the cold winter. To achieve this, people in the past did not simply warm it gently over the embers; they often plunged a glowing iron rod directly into the cauldron! This was not only a turbo-quick way to heat it, but it also had a great side effect: the sugar in the wine caramelized, giving the entire mixture an even more intense, spicier flavor. Today, Glühwein is inseparably linked to cold winter afternoons at the Christmas market. It is much more than a drink; it is the liquid heart of Advent and your perfect hand warmer. The next time you grab your steaming mug, remember: you are holding 2,000 years of European pleasure history in your hands – cheers!

Afternoon of Christmas Warmth and Cheer!
Come to Natürlich Deutsch on December 13th and try this delicious hot drink!
I warmly invite you to spend an afternoon filled with genuine Christmas warmth and cheer with me, featuring mulled wine, Christmas cookies (Plätzchen), and a small fire to keep warm.
We will, of course, drink the mulled wine outside, as this is how the atmosphere is most authentic – so dress warmly!
I look forward to seeing you!
